Many workplaces, including BLR®, have had “Pie Days,” where employees fancying themselves as bona fide bakers enter their specialties and unique creations for the admiration—and appetites—of their colleagues and to possibly win a prize. So what could be better than pie day?
According to The Boston Globe, what tops Pie Day at famed bakeries in Bean Town is—Pi Day!
Why pi? Flour Bakery + Café founder Joanne Chang just happens to be an honors graduate of Harvard College with a degree in applied mathematics and economics who loves pi as much as pie.
After apprenticeships at noted restaurants and patisseries around the country, she and her husband opened a bakery/bistro, whose popularity and success quickly spawned three more locations.
Chang has also been featured in magazines such as Gourmet and Food & Wine® and on television shows such as Today, The Chew, and on The Food Channel, where she participated in a sticky bun throwdown with Bobby Flay. She has also written several books. But for all her culinary success, she has never lost her fascination with π.
Taking her role as an employer and mentor very seriously, Chang decided to honor employee anniversaries and loyalty in a unique way—with a Pi Day celebration.
HR Director Aimee Francaes explained to the Globe that at the company, an employee’s special anniversary is considered the day he or she reaches 3.14 years of service (3 years and 51 days)!
In the spirit of Chang’s company culture, not only do employees receive a “generous financial benefit,” according to Francaes, but they also get to choose a charity to receive a donation from the company in the honoree’s name.
Recipients have included schools, hospitals and medical research, and even a penguin rescue group. So it looks like these happy employees get to celebrate, have their pie, and eat it, too.
Warning from SBT—look at the company’s website only if you are not on a diet.
For the real numbers geek, National Pi Day is 3/14: http://www.piday.org/.
