Taxicab Confessions: Applicant Shows Up Under the Influence

Crazy job interview experiences are nothing new to HRSBT, and the following story is no different, but it will leave you scratching your head and wondering “what are people thinking?”

When applying to be a taxicab driver, or any driving position for that matter, what is the one thing you shouldn’t do before a job interview? Getting fall-down drunk should be the number one answer, but that seemed to escape one Iowa applicant who showed up to his job interview after downing a fifth of vodka.

An employee for Trans Iowa happened to notice the applicant when the employee went outside and saw a white car driving erratically in the parking lot. The employee witnessed the applicant hit two cars in the parking lot and then stumble into the building. The employee then went back inside and asked the applicant if he had been helped, but the applicant couldn’t comprehend what she was saying.

The police were called, and they took the applicant into custody. Iowa police claim the applicant was unable to finish a field sobriety test because he was too intoxicated, and a preliminary breath test showed he blew a .273, which is more than three times the legal limit. All this happened before 9:30 a.m.

According to the police report, the man had stayed up until 2:00 a.m. drinking, checked himself into the hospital for alcohol consumption, and then began to drink again upon his release at 8 a.m. The man was arrested and charged with operating while intoxicated—first offense—before he had a chance to go into the interview. This was probably not the way to win over your future employer!
