Employer Survey: Cell Phone Use Widespread, But Few Employers Have Policy

We recently polled our CEA subscribers to determine how employers are managing employee cell phone use issues. Employers who responded had staff sizes ranging from five to more than 5,000.

Cell Phone Use While Driving

More than 96% of employers who responded said that some or all of their employees use cell phones to conduct business away from their premises, with the percentage of cell phone users ranging from under 1% to 100% of their workforce. Only about 13% of responding employers have a policy prohibiting employees from using cell phones while driving, although 71% of respondents said they would consider adopting one.

Hands-Free Devices, Training

About 29% of respondents provide hands-free devices to employees for use in vehicles. Only 24% of employers offered their employees information on how to use cell phones safely while driving.

Driving Records

Sixty-two percent of the employers periodically check driving records of employees who are required to drive on the job. But only 1% of employers found that an employee had an accident while talking on a cell phone.
