The average salary
for staff positions in nonprofit organizations increased by almost 4 percent in
2007 from the prior year, according to a new study conducted by HR consulting
firm Total Compensation Solutions (TCS). Base salaries and total cash
compensation offered by nonprofits are now about equal to those of for-profit
firms, the study revealed. Also, in a significant change from the past,
nonprofits are setting employee pay based on individual performance and best
practices in the market. TCS observes that “nonprofits need to pay higher
salaries to compete effectively for executive and staff positions in a highly
competitive marketplace.… They also have to link pay to performance or they
risk losing good people to the for-profit sector.” For more on the survey, go
