Telecommuting, Flex, Dress—What’s Actually Happening?

By BLR Founder and CEO Bob Brady

For years, BLR® has surveyed HR and benefits professionals to see what benefits they are actually offering to employees. This year, we are expanding our survey program by conducting a series of brief, targeted benefits surveys. The findings of these surveys are analyzed and presented free to all respondents.

Today’s Survey Topics: Telecommuting, Flextime, and Dress Codes

We link these topics together because they all are "contemporary" benefits issues, there is a wide range of possible policy approaches, and all can be problematic if they aren’t handled carefully.

As an example, for telecommuting we want to find out:

  • Does your company have formal guidelines?
  • Do employees sign a formal agreement?
  • Do you require a separate work area?
  • Do you require child care for those with children at home?
  • Do you have an allowance or reimbursement policy for home office expenses?
  • What benefits have you seen from telecommuting?

With flexible schedules, are they offered to both exempt and nonexempt employees? Do you allow compressed workweeks? Do you require core hours or do telecommuters have total flexibility?
