What Are Businesses Doing to Control Travel and Relo Costs?

By Robert Brady

For years, BLR® has surveyed HR and benefits professionals to see what benefits they are actually offering. This year, we have expanded our survey program by conducting a series of brief, targeted benefits surveys. Today’s topics: Travel and Relocation Benefits. (Survey results are presented in a future issue of the HR Daily Advisor.)

Today’s Survey Topics: Business Travel and Relocation

Things may be brightening in the economy, but at most companies, controlling costs is still a major priority. And travel and relocation are two areas ripe for savings. Let’s find out what’s working. Here are some of the tricky issues we’re probing in our survey:

  • What is your company’s policy for reimbursement of meal and lodging expenses? Per diem? Actual expenses? Is there a cap?
  • Do you issue company credit cards?
  • What is the threshold at which you require a receipt for expense reimbursement?
  • Are frequent flier miles kept by employees?
    • Reduced the frequency of business travel?
    • Reduced the duration of business travel?
    • Spent less on restaurants (including entertainment expense)?
    • Booked less expensive lodging?
    • Increased usage of online meeting tools such as teleconferencing?

  • What’s your policy for reimbursing employees for relocation expenses?
  • What’s your budget per employee move in 2011?
