California State Agencies Over Report Stimulus Jobs

California has received $12.8 billion dollars in federal stimulus funds since February of 2009. State agencies have reported over 54,000 jobs created with these funds. The problem? A recent report by the California Bureau of State Audits found that the job creation numbers are not being recorded accurately.

The December 21 audit report looked at jobs data from five state agencies and found a total of 617 full-time jobs that were overreported. Among the five agencies investigated were the Department of Community Services and Development, the Water Resources Control Board, and the Tax Credit Allocation Committee.

Inaccurate numbers and jobs counted multiple times are among the typical problems. Many of these issues have also been recorded in the state’s 12 highest jobs-producing programs. The Bureau of State Audits recommended that the California Recovery Task Force, formed in 2009, should step in to provide technical assistance and training to help remedy these errors.
