American Indians and Alaska Natives is one of the six major race categories. Each November, the United States celebrates American Indian and Alaska Native Heritage Month. Here are some facts from the U.S. Census Bureau on the group:
- As of the 2010 Census, the population of American Indians and Alaska Natives in the United States was 5.2 million, making up 1.7 percent of the total population. Of this total, 2.9 million were American Indian and Alaska Native only, and 2.3 million were American Indian and Alaska Native in combination with one or more other races.
- By July 1, 2050, the projected population of American Indians and Alaska Natives, including those of more than one race, is 8.6 million, comprising 2 percent of the total population.
- In 2007, 236,967 American Indian- and Alaska Native-owned businesses had receipts totaling 34.4 billion.
- In 2007, 23,704 American Indian- and Alaska Native-owned firms employed 184,416 people.
- Of civilian-employed American Indian and Alaska Native people 16 and older, 25 percent worked in management, business, science and arts occupations. In addition, 25 percent worked in service occupations and 24 percent in sales and office occupations.
