HAZWOPER Training Requirements Video: Part 2

In our first video, Dave went over what HAZWOPER is, who the regulation covers, and the training requirements for different groups of employees and managers.

In this video, I talk to Dave about the topics that must be covered during the training, how to provide proof of training, and what requirements the trainer must have in order to train.
So let’s get started with what must be covered in HAZWOPER training. Can you give us a brief overview of the topics, Dave?
DG: Sure. The off-site training, which can be classroom training or online training, must thoroughly cover:

  1. Names of personnel and alternates responsible for site safety and health
  2. Safety, health, and other hazards present on-site
  3. Use of PPE
  4. Work practices by which the employee can minimize risks from hazards
  5. Safe use of engineering controls and equipment on-site
  6. Medical surveillance requirements, including recognition of symptoms and signs that may indicate overexposure to hazards
  7. Decontamination procedures
  8. The emergency response plan
  9. Confined space entry procedures
  10. The spill containment program

HH: That’s a lot of topics, no wonder they need so many hours of training!
So once they’ve had all this training, how do they prove they’ve, in fact, completed it?
DG: Once an employee has successfully completed the required training, a written certificate certifying this fact is to be issued by his or her instructor or the head instructor and the employee’s trained supervisor.

HH: They certainly earned it! One last question: Are there any requirements for the trainer?
DG: Yes. Trainers must satisfactorily complete a training program for teaching the subjects they are expected to teach or they must have adequate academic credentials and instructional experience to do so. Furthermore, instructors are required to demonstrate competent instructional skills and knowledge of the applicable subject matter.
HH: Great, thanks for talking with us today, Dave.
