The Wage & Hour Division (WHD) of the U.S. Department of Labor, which enforces the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA), recovered more than $280 million in back wages for over 308,000 employees in Fiscal Year 2012. This map reflects a sampling of 2013 WHD enforcement activity—including recovery of wages and punitive damages—taken against employers in the Southeast region of the United States, including the states of Alabama, Delaware, Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, Maryland, Mississippi, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee, Virginia, and West Virginia.
The map provides each employer’s location, industry, its violation(s), and the amount of the assessed fine. One of the largest fines assessed to an employer in the Southeast was $1,075,000 against a Tennessee-based cable installer that was distributed among 196 employees who were either misclassified as independent contractors, denied overtime pay, or both.
