Alignment, Talent, Metrics, Branding—Simple to Say, Hard to Do

In yesterday’s Advisor, we covered policy and basic issues HR managers will face for the rest of the year; today, strategic issues, plus an introduction to a free Sue Meisinger webcast on challenges for HR in 2014.

Strategic goals sound so simple (align work with company strategy, develop an employment brand, develop good metrics) but they can be the devil’s own to bring to reality. Here are some issues to ponder through 2014:

  • Alignment. How can you ensure that HR strategy is in line with corporate strategy?
  • Talent management. How can you best deal with talent management in all its challenging components?
  • Specific positions that are hard to fill because of:
      • Bloated salaries
      • Unattractive location
      • Simple shortage of competent workers in the specialty

  • Or the flip side, if they don’t retire, what to do for high potential younger managers with nowhere to go.
  • Culture. How do you define it and how can you make it universal in your organization?
  • Metrics and Big Data. How can you use the amazing amount of data now available in a meaningful way?

Speakers:

Susan R. Meisinger, SPHR, JD, is a widely read columnist on HR Leadership for HRExecutive Online.  She speaks and consults on human resource management issues, and is the former president and CEO of the Society for Human Resource Management (SHRM), the world’s largest professional association devoted to human resource management with more than 250,000 members.  Before joining SHRM, Meisinger was appointed by President Ronald Reagan as Deputy Under Secretary in the U.S. Department of Labor, and was responsible for more than 4,000 employees and enforcement of more than 90 U.S. employment laws. Meisinger is a former board member for the World Federation of Personnel Management Associations, SHRM, and the HR Certification Institute and has corporate board experience.  She is a fellow of the National Academy of Human Resources and the Human Resource Policy Institute.  She currently sits on the board of the Certified Financial Planners Board of Standards, the Kronos Workforce Institute Advisory Board, the Advisory Board of the University of Mary Washington College of Business, and the National Academy of Human Resources board of directors. Meisinger also coauthored and edited "The Future of Human Resource Management," which was published in 2005 by John Wiley & Sons.
