HR Strange But True

Fisticuffs erupt in a most unlikely workplace

Cases of workplace violence usually end up in a court, not start in a court! So it must have been backwards day in Orlando when a dispute turned into a scuffle in a courthouse hallway.

And don’t attorneys know better? Such language doesn’t belong in a workplace!

Yes, it was quite a scene in the Brevard County Courthouse when a judge asked a public defender to waive his client’s rights to a speedy trial. When the public defender refused, angry—and childish—words were exchanged,
Floridatoday.com quoting the judge as yelling “If I had a rock, I would throw it at you. Stop pi**ing me off. Just sit down….”

Then the public defender said he had a right to stand before the bench, the judge responded, “I said sit down. If you want to fight let’s go out back, and I’ll just beat your a**.”

“Let’s go,” says the public defender. The two leave the range of the camera, but thuds can be heard on the audio, allegedly the judge hitting the public defender before a deputy sheriff could separate the two barristers.

You can see the exchange at clickorlando.com/WKMG Local 6.

While the parties refused to press charges, and criminal charges were not filed, the two could face discipline from the Bar Association. Maybe they should be forced to watch “Anger Management.”

  1. Scuffles at courthouses aren’t necessarily that unusual–but scuffles initiated by a judge? Yikes!
