HR Strange But True

Fired BEFORE You Start Your New Job … It’s Not the First Time, Either!

Imagine going through the application process, then the interviews, and finally learning that you got the job, only to be fired from it before you even start working!

That seems to be the case for one woman in Texas. According to MyFoxNY.com, the woman was to begin working at a daycare facility, but her Facebook post led her to be fired before she even started. Her post read, “I start my new job today but I absolutely hate working at a day care. I just really hate being around a lot of kids.”

Her post spread like wildfire, prompting outrage from fellow Facebookers, and eventually leading to her termination. Her employer saw the post and told her not to bother coming in. The real irony here is that the woman is a single mother trying to provide for her only child. She is currently still looking for a new job and says she’ll never post something like that again!

Similarly, a teenager was fired from a pizza restaurant before she even started after a Twitter rant left her unemployed. The teenager posted, “Ew, I start this f*** a** job tomorrow” with a line of thumbs down emojis. Even though she never mentioned the pizza place by name, it didn’t stop fellow employees from seeing the rant and showing it to the manager.

The manager responded to her complaints via Twitter with: “And … no, you don’t start that FA job today! I just fired you! Good luck with your no money, no job life!” The manager also said, “I would’ve just called her and fired her, but I wasn’t at work and didn’t have her number … probably one of the dumbest things to say about a job you haven’t started yet.” No wiser words were ever spoken! Let that be a lesson: If you’re going to complain about your job, don’t do it on social media!

  1. Both firings are totally justified, of course, but the pizza manager could have handled that termination better. I’m sure his/her boss wasn’t too happy with the unprofessional nature of that tweet.
