HRSBT can’t believe that people just don’t get it! If you are on workers’ comp—and you shouldn’t be—don’t photograph your fraudulent activities.
A California corrections officer allegedly injured his foot on the job at a prison, according to the Sacramento County District Attorney’s Office news release.
Unfortunately, the Office of Internal Affairs, Workers’ Compensation Insurance Fraud Unit got wind that though having difficulty walking, the corrections officer:
- Engaged in a sponsored 50-mile hike over rugged terrain
- Did rock climbing
- Went snowshoeing
- Took several more “extreme” hikes
Sure, these were all in remote places where no one probably saw him. However, when the investigators obtained a search warrant, they found videos and photographs of the activities, some taken by the corrections officer himself!
Even more head-scratching is the fact that the officer performed in two plays, each for several performances, with no apparent trouble moving around the stage on his foot in front of an audience.
Yes, you can guess what happened. For failure to disclose events that would have affected the benefits he was receiving, he was sentenced to 150 days in jail with probation at a sheriff’s work furlough program. He was ordered to pay restitution of over $33,000.
It’d be funny if such abuse wasn’t so common. These people give others with legitimate injuries a bad name.
