HR Strange But True

Commander in ‘Beats’?

Now that ex-President Barack Obama has a little extra time on his hands, how will he spend his “retirement” from commander in chief? One music-streaming website is offering Obama a chance to become president again, but not for the United States.

According to BBC News, Spotify has offered Obama the chance to become “President of Playlists.” Obama had once joked that he would like to work for Spotify, and the company seems all too willing to hire him! It even created a job posting on its career page that seems like it’s a little too inclusive!

Spotify CEO Daniel Ek tweeted to the ex-president, “I heard you were interested in a role at Spotify. Have you seen this one?” and then linked to the job posting. The posting says the company is looking for someone who has “at least [8] years’ experience running a highly-regarded nation … a friendly and warm attitude, and a Nobel Peace Prize.” When you combine all three of those requirements, not too many people come to mind.

Most job postings list what the potential new hire would be responsible for in his or her new role, and this special posting is no different! BBC News reports that the, “‘What you’ll do’ section says the candidate will identify new playlist ideas, ‘from a playlist for shooting hoops with your friends, to the perfect warm up playlist for addressing the nation about health care legislation that bears your name.” The posting also asks, “Ever had Kendrick Lamar play at your birthday bash? We’d love to hear about it!”—eluding to Obama’s 55th birthday, where Lamar personally performed.

Oddly enough, the posting doesn’t mention anything about experience with Spotify or playlists, but that shouldn’t hurt Obama’s chances. Obama has been sharing his personal playlists since 2015, so he’s got a few years’ worth of experience.

It’s only been a few days since Obama has left the oval office, but Natalia Brzezinski—the wife of former U.S. ambassador to Sweden—says the former president told her husband “I’m still waiting for my job at Spotify … Cuz’ I know y’all loved my playlist!”
