Courts Reject Class Actions Against Wal-Mart

A federal judge in Los
Angeles has ruled that a lawsuit filed on behalf of 2,750 current and former
assistant managers in California Wal-Mart stores doesn’t meet the requirements
for a class action suit because each manager’s claims are too individualized
and must be assessed case by case. The lawsuit alleged that the retail giant
violated state and federal laws by improperly classifying assistant managers as
exempt managers, even though these employees spent more than half their time on
nonmanagerial tasks, such as running the cash register. The suit also charged
that these workers were denied required meal breaks.
