HR Strange But True

Sitting Has Its Side Effects

By Kyle Emshwiller

Is your job harmful to your health? According to recent reports, if you sit at a desk all day, yes.

A recent article in the New York Times , fittingly called “Is Sitting a Lethal Activity?” looked at several studies on the health effects of leading a sedentary lifestyle.

One study cited tracked the health of 123,000 Americans between 1992 and 2006 and found that men and women who sat 6 hours or more per day had a much higher overall death rate (overall death rate was around 20 percent higher for men and 40 percent higher for women).

Depending on your job, sitting 6 hours a day isn’t much of a stretch.

However, there are steps you can take.  Walk on your breaks, do simple exercises at your desk, and so on.

Then there are workers who don’t even need to worry about getting their exercise in. Take for example a 21-year-old intern whose summer job was to inspect 245 miles of sidewalks in the town of West Hartford, Connecticut. With clipboard in hand, the intern bikes on the sidewalks and chats to residents, according to the Hartford Courant. Talk about a workout!
