Looking for a way to keep workers engaged during work? Motivate them to fit in exercise during working hours.

As we reported in last week’s column, sitting for a long period of time each day can lead to serious health effects.

In addition to improving the health and wellness of employees, having employees exercise at work may work out for your company’s bottom line as well, according to a recent study.

Researchers at Leeds Metropolitan University in the United Kingdom studied 200 workers who spent 30 to 60 minutes during their lunch hour working out (aerobics, weight lifting, yoga, etc.). According to the results, a majority (6 out of 10) had better mental performance, time management skills, and ability to meet deadlines Leeds professor,.

Additionally, exercising appears to improve employees’ moods. “They were more tolerant of their own shortcomings and to those of others,” said Jim McKenna, the study’s author.

Workers who exercised during the day are also less prone to yell at co-workers, slam the phone, and lost their temper, according to the research. See the infographic on blog.gist.com for more results.
