Office Decor—Company Eschews Minimalist for Funky

Are you stuck in a neutral-colored cubicle with no view of the sky? Does your company ban personal pictures and mementos from your work space? Does all the furniture match?

Excessive blandness has been known to lead to lethargy at the least. Well, Etsy is in the forefront of bucking the minimalist trend in office decor.

Etsy, the website that is a venue for the sale of handcrafted and vintage items, was founded to feature and empower individual creativity and carries this goal to its company culture.  So the company believes that personalization of the work space and “creative living” are so important to employees that it gives new workers a stipend to decorate their work areas!

Etsy’s Brooklyn, New York, headquarters in the DUMBO (Down Under the Manhattan Bridge Overpass) district has the room for workers to express themselves in its open space plan.  So the hardwood floors are adorned with artistic area rugs and funky, one-of-a-kind—or ultramodern ergonomic—chairs sit next to unique desks created in the company’s own wood shop.

Common areas contain some of the handmade items available on the website, and bright colors are not forbidden, as reflected in the unmatched window treatments. And an assortment of plants fills the windowed spaces.

The foyer features a giant wooden owl to greet visitors.  And check out the phone booth!

When workers want to collaborate—or meditate—they can enter one of the “breathing rooms,” sit on one of the handmade floor cushions, and be electronic-device free for a few moments.

Yes, Etsy has created a pleasant and productive workplace that is green—and yellow, blue, red, and purple—and personalized!
