HR Strange But True

How Festive! Company Says Have Your Wedding in the Workplace

Every girl dreams of her wedding, but not many dream of having it where they work. That is, unless you work for the Bank of Korea!

Media report that the Bank’s headquarters even has a 200-seat auditorium as the venue, complete with a bride’s waiting room.  And the entire venture was designed and approved by a wedding planner, so it’s not like getting married in your company’s lunch room.

And you don’t have to worry about your coworkers or customers interfering in the festivities; the weddings are only allowed on weekends.

According to Reuters and other outlets, couples don’t mind the large portraits of the bank’s top officials on the walls; involving the state in their private affairs is OK with most South Koreans.  And since large guest lists are the norm in South Korea, cash-strapped employees see the gesture as a way to save money on the venue—the average wedding in the country costs $15,000—and add more guests.

Employers gain good will from this practice, so other South Korean organizations have opened their facilities as wedding venues, according to Reuters.  The idea is so popular that lotteries must be held to determine which employee can get a popular wedding date.

  1. Hard to imagine this catching on in the States, but who knows–it could be a reality show in the making!
