New Value-Based Insurance Design (VBID) Pilot Launched For Medicare Plans

Value-Based Insurance Design (VBID) generally refers to health insurers’ efforts to structure enrollee cost-sharing and other health plan design elements to encourage enrollees to utilize high-value clinical services – those that have the greatest potential to positively affect their health.

Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) has just announced a new test of a VBID model for Medicare Advantage plans in 7 states, starting on January 1, 2017.

These plans will have the opportunity to offer supplemental benefits or reduced cost-sharing to enrollees with certain CMS-specified chronic conditions.
