What do Instagram and overtime have in common? Some would answer, “nothing, that’s counterproductive.” However, a recent study conducted by Paychex paired the two together to find out American’s work habits as it relates to overtime.
The study, “#Overtime—Where and When Are People Talking about Working Overtime on Instagram?”, analyzed over 150,000 Instagram posts that used the hashtag overtime—excluding posts involving sports, working out, and the gym. Instagram, a social media app, is used entirely for photo sharing, but you can also add trending hashtags to accompany your images.
As part of the study, Paychex looked at which months and days see spikes in #Overtime posts, the states from which people post most frequently about extra work hours, and what people have to say on the subject. What did this study find?
March Madness
One would think that most employees are slacking off during the NCAA March Madness season, but the Paychex study proves the opposite. March is the most popular month for people working overtime. According to the study, “March also tends to be a busy month for auditors, CPAs, and others in the financial industry, as Americans scramble to file taxes.”
The study found that the summer months, May to August, see the lowest #Overtime posts. This is most likely due to warmer weather, summer vacations, and employee incentives—such as flex-time. What day sees the most #Overtime posts?
