In Illinois, employees soon will be able to use their sick days to care for family members.
The state’s governor signed the Employee Sick Leave Act (HB 6162) into law August 19. It takes effect January 1, 2017, and requires employers to allow workers to use some available sick time for a family member’s illness.
The new law applies to personal sick leave benefits, which are defined as “time accrued and available to an employee to be used as a result of absence from work due to personal illness, injury, or medical appointment.”
