The “Great Recession” may be over, but that doesn’t mean you’re safe from termination! Case in point: MetLife just fired its longest-standing employee—Snoopy, MetLife’s mascot for the past 30 years.
Business Insider reports that the company gave the mascot the ax in late October. Snoopy has been “employed” by MetLife since the late 1980s and was used to promote the company’s brand.
In response to the transition, Chief Marketing Officer Ester Lee said, “We have a lot of affection for Snoopy … He’s rated very high as a good friend and on approachability. Where he didn’t rate as high is things like, as a leader, keeps promises, is a good adviser.” It’s no wonder Snoopy got fired. Being a leader requires you to be a good advisor. Not to mention, regarding insurance, customers expect the insurance company to “keep its promises.”
However, what did MetLife expect? Snoopy is notorious for causing a little bit of trouble in the original comic series, Peanuts, and not to mention he was constantly making fun of his owner, Charlie Brown. So, yes, Snoopy may be a better fit as a friend instead of a brand! MetLife will now be focusing on a new brand with the tagline: “MetLife. Navigating life together.”
So if you’re in the market for a new mascot, give Snoopy a chance! Not only is he described as “loyal, funny, imaginative, and good-natured,” he’s also got a great reputation as a loyal employee! How many people do you know who have been with the same company for 30 years!
