Quick Tip: When Does It Make Sense to Use Online Training?

Each organization needs to weigh the advantages and disadvantages of online learning and decide when it makes sense to use it as part of a blended learning approach.

Here are some advantages that you might want to consider:

  • Flexibility. Learners can complete online training modules at times that are most convenient for them. This can be particularly beneficial with a multishift or geographically dispersed workforce.
  • Self-pacing. Learners can review the material as often as needed to increase their comprehension of it.
  • Standardization. Online learning allows all employees to view the same materials each time.

You also should factor in the following disadvantages:

  •  Online learning is impersonal. Even if you are using an interactive program, the experience will not be the same as when a “live” trainer or learner spontaneously sparks a free-ranging discussion or answers questions on the spot.
  • Online learning offers limited opportunities for actual hands-on demonstrations. If your goal is to model a new technique or skill and then have learners practice it, online training might not be the best approach.
