What We Learned From… Elevating the Employee Experience Pre-Conference

HR Daily Advisor is in Denver, Colorado for HCI’s Elevating the Employee Experience (EEE) Conference! Wednesday marked the start of the event, and here’s what we learned from Sarah Deveraux and her workshop on human-centered design principals and how to innovate to enhance the employee experience.

Design thinking is the first step in crafting human-centered solutions. Deveraux said, “We’re in a moment where it’s all about being human-centric,” meaning that empathy, and building the employee experience are essential. So, how does design thinking work in the HR space?

To start, it’s important to dispel 3 major myths about design thinking:

  • It’s for more than just designers,
  • It’s useful for more than just product design,
  • And it doesn’t require visionary talent and imagination, just thoughtfullness.

The design thinking process can be broken down into 5 major steps:

  • Empathize,
  • Define,
  • Ideate,
  • Prototype, and
  • Test

The first three are where HR leaders have an opportunity to incorporate human-centered design. Ultimately, the addition of people-first practices allow for an opportunity to make the most progress with, ideally, the least resistance. It’s also important to think specifically to your people, because, as Deveraux said, “When we design for everyone, we design for no one.”
