  1. Great tips and very inspiring. I particularly love “stopping to celebrate wins.” As notee we are often so busy moving from crisis to crisis that we don’t stop and appreciate the work that has led to winning.

  2. Thank you for bringing “Remember the Titans” to the conversation. I have long considered it an amazing film for many of the reasons you cite, and in addition, Diversity.

What you didn’t describe is how the team was brought together. Two town’s high schools were merged, one from the white side of town, the other the black side, both deeply segregated. Both had had football teams so players from each of the original schools tried out for the team. In addition to the clear and demanding rules and expectations the coach set down around basic skills, he also insisted on attitude, interpersonal behavior and appearance. He forced defensive players to sit together and offensive to as well disregarding race issues. He made each team member live with a person of a different race, and learn things about each other.

What evolved was an understanding of not just the differences, but the similarities they shared as individuals. They developed deep friendships, respect and commitment to each other. They had a common goal, play well, support each other and win. In the film, their connections and the messages Dan referred to, influenced the parents and other students to have a deeper understanding of and comfort with racial differences.

I too could watch this film many more times! Each time I do, I learn something new.

  3. Thanks for the article…the movie is one of my favorites too. As you mentioned, it teaches a number of management skills and interpersonal skills. One area that I appreciate is the leadership skills taught to the players and the assistant coach. For me, it reinforces how my actions affect others in ways I don’t always understand or comprehend.
