8 Companies Honored for Mentoring Programs

HeiTech Services president and CEO Heidi Gerding understands the challenges that small businesses face in the government contracting industry and has reaped the benefits of mentoring. That’s why her company decided to mentor an emerging company itself.
“Mentoring has had a lasting impact on the growth and successes of HeiTech Services,” said Gerding. “Having access, forecasting, and input to key decision-making from professionals and organizations that [have] been down your path can mean all the difference in the government contracting industry. Our experience, as a protégé, facilitated our decision to seek and mentor an emerging company.”
In 2012, Landover, Maryland-based HeiTech (www.heitechservices.com) entered into a formal mentor-protégé partnership with AMTIS, Inc., an Orlando-based company that provides professional and business processing services, leader development, and training services.

HeiTech provides mentoring in various areas of AMTIS’s business and helped AMTIS successfully participate and graduate from the 8(a) Business Development Program, which is named for Section 8(a) of the Small Business Act. The program is aimed at helping small and disadvantaged businesses compete in the marketplace and gain access to federal and private procurement markets, according to the Small Business Administration.
HeiTech is one of eight companies that recently received a 2014 “Mentor of the Year Award” from Government Contracting Weekly and the Government Technology & Services Coalition (GTSC) for supporting the growth and development of small businesses working in the federal market. In addition, HeiTech nominated SERCO, its own mentor and another Mentor of the Year Award recipient. SERCO is a provider of professional, technology, and management services.
InfoPro, Inc., a provider of information systems, enterprise solutions, and systems integration services, also won a Mentor of the Year Award. InfoPro was nominated by Mt. Airey Group, Inc. for helping it better structure its internal capacity and pursuing teaming opportunities and certification.

The other award recipients are B3 Solutions, which provides acquisition management and contract administration, information technology and security, program management, supply chain management and logistics, and systems engineering services; BAE Systems, Electronic Systems Sector, a global company engaged in the development, delivery, and support of advanced defense, security, and aerospace systems; General Dynamics Information Technology, an integrator of mission-critical IT systems; L3 National Security Solutions, a provider of full-spectrum cyber operations, enterprise and mission information technology, intelligence operations support, and operational infrastructure solutions; and REI Systems, which provides Web applicants, grants systems, and open government/transparency websites.
“GTSC is proud to recognize these corporate citizens that partner with and support the growth and development of small companies in the federal market. Their mentoring and assistance is a critical component of a small business’s success, and we are excited to recognize their contribution,” said Kristina Tanasichuk, CEO of the GTSC.
“We are excited to award these good stewards some recognition for their contribution to the success of small businesses and ultimately a more effective use of federal taxpayer dollars,” said Jim McCarthy, owner and technical director of AOC Key Solutions and host/moderator of “Government Contracting Weekly,” a television program dedicated to winning government contracts.
