Low employee engagement continues to be one of the biggest challenges facing organizations, with data from Gallup showing employee engagement in the United States consistently trending from 31% to 32% since the beginning of 2015. For organizations striving to close the engagement gap, new research from the International Coach Federation (ICF) and Human Capital Institute (HCI) shows that investing in coaching is a critical first step.
According to ICF and HCI’s Building a Coaching Culture for Increased Employee Engagement, 60% of employees rate themselves as “highly engaged” in organizations with strong coaching cultures (versus 48% in organizations without).

The research also showed that coaching is especially impactful among high-potential employees. Organizations that offer high-potential employees access to external coaches, internal coaches, and managers or leaders using coaching skills reported engagement increases of 62%, 61%, and 59%, respectively, within this group.
“This study provides further compelling evidence of how coaching can substantially impact organizational results,” said ICF Professional Certified Coach and 2015 Global Board Chair Dave Wondra.
Building a Coaching Culture for Increased Employee Engagement is the latest product of ICF and HCI’s signature research partnership exploring the components of strong coaching cultures and how organizations use coaching to achieve strategic objectives. The research is based on a 20-question survey administered to 340 human resources, talent management, and learning and development professionals.

In 2014, ICF and HCI published Building a Coaching Culture, a benchmarking research study based on survey responses from more than 500 human resources, talent development, and learning and development professionals, as well as in-depth interviews with subject-matter experts.
