HR Strange But True

New Workplace Perk: PTO for Television Premieres

If you know what happened to Jon Snow in the season six premiere of Game of Thrones (GoT), keep it to yourself; there will be no spoiler alerts here at HRSBT! With that being said, a new workplace perk could be on the rise after one London company allowed employees to take the morning off after the season six premiere of GoT—with pay!

Mashable.com reports that a London-based technology firm, +rehabstudios, had allowed their employees to take the morning off after the April 24 premiere, with pay. There is one minor stipulation—employees working in the United States are not allowed to talk about the episode on the company’s intranet, until after the episode has aired in the United Kingdom.

Tim Rodgers, founding partner of +rehabstudios, told Mashable, “We have some huge fans in the office,” he said. “What we loved is that this story has spiralled  from a post that one of our team put on LinkedIn, and suddenly she had thousands of likes and Twitter went crazy.”

The perk came about when the executives were updating the company’s handbook. Rodgers said, “This year it’s GoT, next year it could be something completely different and the team[s] are welcome to give us suggestions.” Many employees have asked if the paid time off (PTO) could be transferable to other popular shows, like The Walking Dead, instead of GoT. The company said that was fine!

So, could +rehabstudios have found the golden ticket to attracting and retaining top talent? Would you allow your employees to take a morning off after a series premiere? Did Jon Snow really die? Maybe some of these questions are better left unanswered!
