Could poor communication be sabotaging your organization’s success? With all the daily challenges and issues they face, most managers do not take the time to be clear, concise, and engaging in how they communicate.
The result is marginal communication practices that are likely compounding already difficult situations.
Engaging, meaningful, effective communication provides a solid framework for cultivating an organization’s ongoing growth and success—and if you’re willing to make the effort to understand how people (and especially leaders) in your organization communicate, you can quickly identify opportunities to significantly enhance communication approaches.
But before you can begin to make improvements, it’s invaluable to understand and identify the gaps in communication and the proven strategies and tools for addressing them.
Join us on November 29 when organizational culture consultant and executive coach Denice Hinden of Managance Consulting & Coaching will deliver a fresh perspective and a clear understanding how effective communication helps in accomplishing organization goals and objectives. She’ll also offer strategies for increasing the overall quality of communications across different levels within the organization, and she’ll share successful approaches for achieving higher morale and productivity for all members of the company.
As a preview for this event, Hinden has supplied some frequently asked questions—and answers—to this HR topic.
Q—What are the main reasons communication is one of the most challenging business processes?
A—Primary among the reasons that communication is challenging is that common words don’t always have common meaning, there is a tendency to reach conclusions without full shared perspective, and there is a tendency to form responses before reaching shared understanding.
Our neurochemistry is wired for this human behavior but fortunately we now know ways leaders and managers can create new, more effective behavior patterns that lead to more effective communication.
Q—What are two easy steps I can take to quickly strengthen my communication?
A—One step is to say, “Tell me more about that” before responding to a question. In this way you get more information before reaching a conclusion, forming an opinion, or even coming up with an answer.
Another step is to ask the person you are speaking with to share, first, how they would approach the issue or answer the question they are asking. In this way you engage their thinking and their perspective first to make an important connection.
Q—Once I strengthen my own communication practices, how can I take what I learn to my team or organization?
A—Strengthening communication among team members takes some practice that our energizing leadership coaching is especially designed to support. In monthly team and individual work sessions, we engage leaders in thinking about who they are is leaders, the mindset they bring that informs their communication, and the language and strategies they use to build trusting and productive conversations.
