LinkedIn is a powerful resource for HR professionals, but reading between the lines of job experiences, education, and a brief “about” blurb takes time and experience. Even then, trying to understand who someone is and how best to approach him or her about a job opportunity is a shot in the dark when you only have limited information.

But with the right tools, LinkedIn can be a powerful guide to help you communicate effectively with someone new, such as a potential job candidate.

One such tool is a new technology called Personality AI. Personality AI allows you to learn more about someone’s personality through publicly available information, like his or her LinkedIn page, by using artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning to analyze a text sample and predict that individual’s personality. When you understand people’s personality, you can learn to communicate with them in a way they will appreciate, which will result in better response rates from potential candidates.

Personality AI enables recruiters to avoid the stress of sending hundreds of e-mails, messages, and phone calls that don’t get responses. With the click of a button, you can learn more about someone’s personality and send messages that resonate with candidates and start a conversation.

Using Personality AI

Personality AI categorizes individual personalities in a variety of ways. For example, Crystal uses Personality AI to identify 16 unique personality types through a Google Chrome extension to analyze the text in a candidate’s LinkedIn profile. Once we understand which personality type a candidate is likely to be, we can better communicate with and more effectively reach out to him or her.

For example, a candidate who is naturally assertive and goal-oriented is unlikely to appreciate a lengthy, detailed e-mail about the responsibilities of a potential job. In fact, this individual may overlook or just plain ignore it.

On the other hand, if this person is naturally skeptical and detail-focused, he or she may appreciate a thorough, factual explanation of the position. By learning more about people’s personality type, you can learn to communicate with them in the way they like rather than the way you like.

Get Responses from Potential Candidates

Personality AI tools offer suggestions for communicating with people in an effective and empathetic way, which can help you stand out from the masses and leave a lasting impact on potential candidates. Instead of falling victim to these potential candidates’ spam folder, personality insights can help you communicate in a way that is comfortable for them and ultimately encourages them to read your message or learn more about what you’re offering.

For example, let’s say you’re trying to reach out to a potential candidate named Sarah. After using Personality AI to predict Sarah’s personality by scanning the text on her LinkedIn profile, you learn that she’s a Motivator type, which means she generally prefers lighthearted, casual communication.

Sending her a formal e-mail with data about the company and details about the day-to-day intricacies is likely to bore her, which means she may overlook the message completely. However, if you e-mailed her in a more casual tone and talked about the people behind the company and the new, exciting things the group is pursuing, she’s much more likely to pay attention to your message and respond.

Simple adjustments in how you communicate can help you break through a cluttered in-box and get replies from potential candidates, which can increase interest in a position and result in more interviews and successful candidate placements.

There are many more ways Personality AI can be used to help you every day. Whether you’re getting to know your coworkers or resolving a conflict with team members, the insights gained from Personality AI can help you understand how to communicate with others in a meaningful, impactful way.

Drew D’Agostino and Greg Skloot are CEO and President, respectively, of Crystal, an app that tells you someone’s personality. Using AI, Crystal accurately identifies a person’s motivations, communication style, and other behavioral traits. D’Agostino and Skloot are also coauthors of Predicting Personality: Using AI to Understand People and Win More Business, a book published by Wiley on November 19, 2019.
