Training has been a priority for McCarthy Building Companies, Inc., throughout its 150-year history. In fact, the commercial construction company states on its website that “learning is at the core of everything we do.”
McCarthy was recently recognized for its training efforts as a Training magazine Top 125 Best Practice Award recipient for the fourth consecutive year. McCarthy ranked sixth on the prestigious list this year—highest among construction companies—and received a special award for its change management and technology initiatives. This is the third year in a row that the firm has placed in the top 10.
“In 2014, McCarthy is celebrating 150 years of building America,” said McCarthy chairman and CEO Mike Bolen. “Certainly much has changed since our early days, but the focus on developing the best builders in the business has never waned. We know we are helping train the individuals who will be partnering with our clients to build America going forward, and we are honored to again be included among the Training Top 125 for our efforts.”
McCarthy was founded as a family-owned business and is now one of the largest 100-percent employee-owned companies in the country, with approximately 1,600 salaried employees at its headquarters in St. Louis and offices in 12 other U.S. cities.

With a culture dedicated to continuous improvement, learning is “a critical facet of our ongoing goal to be The Best Builder in America,” the firm stated. A formal training program has been in place for decades at McCarthy, but the firm launched an entirely revamped training program in 2008 under McCarthy Build U®.
“Unusual in the construction industry and among best-in-class training programs outside of the construction industry, McCarthy Build U is a personalized approach to employee development. Other training topics include leadership, policies, compliance, and technology, the firm states on its website.
“The effectiveness of our training program directly impacts McCarthy’s ability to execute high-quality work, attract and retain top talent, and deliver superior results for our clients,” said McCarthy president and COO Derek Glanvill. “Ultimately, we believe training is an investment in our future.”
The firm has also been honored with various awards for its efforts to educate employees about health and wellness. In recent years, for example, McCarthy has been named a Platinum-Level Fit-Friendly Worksite by the American Heart Association. Its comprehensive wellness program, McCarthy Build for Life, was launched in 2010. Build for Life is aimed at encouraging all McCarthy employees and their families to strive to achieve optimal mental, physical, emotional, and financial well-being.
