Food Friends

Food is a great way to bring people together, and there are many sub-categories of activities around this teambuilding idea. For example, consider hosting a cooking class, having the team cook (and eat) together, organizing a potluck, or simply catering meals for the group.
Including food helps elicit memories and stories as well as discussions about what people have in common or not about tastes in certain dishes and cuisines.

Professional Development Videos

There are plenty of professional development videos available, and many are readily accessible free of charge on platforms like YouTube. This exercise involves having the team watch one or more of these videos together and then discuss them as a group.

Using Nostalgia to Build Trust on a Team

The primary reason for having teambuilding exercises is to build trust, and nostalgia can help elicit trust within a group. “Nostalgia is a sweet emotion that is one of the fastest ways to build connections,” one expert says. Elicit this emotion by asking easy nostalgia questions, which include “what is your favorite childhood memory?”; or “who was your role model growing up?”.

Alphabet Work

This is one people may not be familiar with. “Alphabet Work”  asks you to list skills starting with “A,” which are those you do very well and going through to “F,” which are those you are very poor at. It helps the team understand each other’s strengths and weaknesses.
These kinds of activities can also be built into virtual meetings and L&D opportunities. Scenario-based learning is also a great tool to boost online engagement. It’s a topic that will be addressed at our annual conference, Workforce L&D.
So far, we’ve covered 8 out of 12 recommended teambuilding activities. In our final post on this topic, we’ll look at the final four.
